Motivation is an inner drive that pushes us to act, grow and chase goals that matter to us. It is something everyone struggles with, making it difficult to do simple daily tasks. For teens, it is tremendously hard to complete homework and study because of phones and other distractions. Now that it is the end of the school year, students lose even more motivation towards school.
As the school year is coming to an end, students’ effort begins to decline significantly. Because students are just wanting to finish the school year, they have begun to care less about completing all of their school work. Instead, they are focused on the school year coming to an end and summer approaching.
On the other hand, some students are having to make up for not trying in the beginning of the school year. Now, because they were not trying at the beginning of the school year, they are having to put in more effort and do everything they can to end the year with the best grade possible. Some students have not lost motivation at all. The end of the school year and summer approaching is giving them more motivation. They are doing everything to get the best grade possible while studying for their AP exams or their semester tests.
Micah Strain is not doing everything he can to maintain his current grade or get his grade up. “No. I could do extra credit, but I don’t like doing it,” said Strain. He also does not care too much about his grades at this point. “I just want them to stay where they are. If they go up, that’s good, but there’s not a lot I can do to bring them up at this point,” said Strain.
AJ Dunn believes he should still be putting in his best effort and not give up even though the end of the year is quickly approaching. “I think you should keep trying because even though we are almost finished, you don’t stop the race right before the finish line,” said Dunn.
Isabella Abels’ mindset at this point in the school year is, “I don’t care. If I stopped doing work, I’d still be going to college.” She does, however, think it is still important to be putting in her best work possible. “Yes, I still think it’s important to try, [but] I just don’t want to,” said Abels.
Katherine Spencer’s mindset during the last couple of weeks of school has been, “I’m tired of school, but I have to power through what remains of it.” She does not believe in giving up. “Don’t give up this close to the end,” said Spencer.
Marrie Luther’s mindset is mostly positive. “I am trying really hard to be positive, but it definitely is harder the closer we are to summer. I am ready to be done,” said Luther. She thinks it is important not to give up this close to the end of the school year. “You owe it to yourself to finish strong,” said Luther.
“Make it till Friday.” Is Ainsley Niederauer’s short and sweet mindset towards the end of the school year.
Johanna Neiderhiser thinks it is important but hard to keep putting forth her best effort in the last four weeks of school: “I think you do need to work as hard, but it’s hard with the spring weather and summer so soon.”
Overall, most students said on a scale from one to five, they are at a four on how hard they are trying in the last four weeks of the school year. This suggests that most students at LHS are still trying and working hard on schoolwork to get the best grade possible.
