Imagine starting from zero at a new school in a different country, not knowing anyone, not knowing where to go, not knowing how to fit in and not having a place to sit at lunch. These are all feelings Paula Juan had when LHS opened its doors to two foreign exchange students for their sophomore year.
“Being new had its downsides, it was hard to find friends. I didn’t have the chance of finding a good friend that would hang out with me for four months. I had my host family, but at times I felt very alone,” said Juan.
This was one of the many hardships she faced at the beginning of the school year. But as the year progressed, Juan was able to express herself and open up. She had major help from her host sister, LHS sophomore Jocelinn Jorgensen. But, once Juan got warmed up to the school, she started enjoying it.
“Lincoln reminds me of every high school film with all the lockers. I love being able to pick my classes, and I have the best counselor, Mr. McDonald. I found a great friend, Hilda. She is the other exchange student, and we had the best year together,” said Juan.
Although the school year is ending, Juan has learned a lot about LHS and American education.
“My favorite class at Lincoln would be General Foods and Interior Design since they don’t offer those classes in Spain. I also love all my teachers; they have all been so nice,” said
Juan.
However, being an exchange student is not all about school; Paula has had many great experiences outside of school.
“Halloween was amazing, the amazing decorations, it was impressive compared to Spain, where we just go to a big party. I also had the pleasure of going to New York City, meeting my host family’s aunts and uncles,” said Juan.
Juan has had an experience like no other, as well as sharing the amazing qualities of LHS. Juan has had an amazing experience at LHS and is so thankful for everyone who has helped her along the way.
“My experience at Lincoln has been a lot better than other exchange students. I also thank my host family, who’s been by my side since day one,” said Juan.
It may be hard facing new opportunities, but Juan shows the importance of always taking a chance and being confident.
“Take every opportunity you get, you never know the memories you’ll make along the way,” said Juan.
