Pickleball is a game similar to tennis in which players use paddles to hit plastic balls over a net. This game can be played with two or four people playing against each other. Pickleball is usually a game played outside during the summer, but this club is the next best thing.
LHS recently started a new club held in the gym every Tuesday morning for students to play pickleball. The club starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at around 8 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join, and many go to have a good time with their friends and to eat breakfast before school.
Trey Naaz is the supervisor of the pickleball club, which he enjoys doing and being a part of.
“A bunch of students showing up to play pickleball with and against their friends. They also come to eat breakfast. We serve donuts, granola bars, coffee and even juice. This is a perfect before-school activity to start the day with friends and a good breakfast,” said Naaz.
Naaz supports the students and tries his best to make sure they have a good time at the club.
“We often play in the gym, but we plan to play on the tennis courts when the weather gets nicer. The number of students that come to the club have increased every week, since the club first started. The most recent week has had about 50 students,” said Naaz.
LHS junior Ellie Johnson is the creator and president of the pickleball club.
“I have always been interested in pickleball, so I decided to start a club at LHS. I know it’s a growing sport, so I decided to take action and bring it to my school. Ever since I started the club, people have been coming consistently. The club is held every Tuesday morning. I think this is perfect because it wakes people up before school. I have been getting a lot of positive feedback about the club. This makes me glad I started the club,” said Johnson.
As the club is continuing to grow, so are the ideas and support going into it.
“I plan on continuing the club going into next year, and I am also trying to continue it over the summer. I have a lot of plans for this club as it is accelerating, and I hope to do a pickleball tournament next year,” said Johnson.
