Picture a man with a bad attitude about Christmas who continuously says “Bah Humbug” and is taken by three spirits to change his view on life. An added twist, he sings while doing this.

Tuesday, Dec. 12 marked the first Tuesday performance ever at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls. Which performance? The holiday classic- “Scrooge.”

“Scrooge” is a musical, directed by James C. Van Oort, based on the life of old Ebenezer Scrooge and his change in opinion towards Christmas and life.

The musical starts with a glimpse into the miserable life of Scrooge, played by Van Oort, and his hate for the holiday season. He is seen ignoring children, making rude remarks to neighbors, unfairly treating his employee and even disrespecting his own nephew, Harry, played by LHS freshman Robert Baker.

After a glance at his present life, the audience sees that Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas past, a character who has a twist. This ghost shows Scrooge his childhood Christmases and the young Ebenezer he used to be, a character played by LHS freshman Cameron Rhode.

Scrooge is later visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present, a Santa Clause-like character, and the Ghost of Christmas yet to come, a spirit who reflects the exact opposite of Christmas: dark, scary, mean and ominous.

All three characters progress Scrooge further and further along his journey to appreciating life and being happy. He learns that life is a gift and everyone in it is as well. He also realizes that you should never let go of the things you love and should always treat everyone with kindness.
