The 4-Square club is mostly made up of freshmen students, yet they accept all grades. They meet on Tuesdays after school in the cafeteria.

Amanda Nelson is a teacher at LHS that teaches classes including Speech, Theatre I and II and Contemporary Literature. Nelson directs the spring play every year and also engages in LHS 4-square club.

Nelson has been to about three 4-square club games, and she has been a teacher that loves to engage with the freshmen 4-square clubbers. This is what made her such a great candidate.

“Huber approached me with such a great opportunity and have been to a few 4-square club meetings, matches, games, tournaments if you will. I was really enthused to be able to be in a leadership position [of 4-square club],” said Nelson.

Nelson is not new to 4-square, just like almost any kids of the last decade, or two, have been playing 4-square, at the outside recess. Nelson had seen the game of 4-square all throughout her elementary school time.

“I made a comeback to the game of 4-square, but I grow up with the game of 4-square, on the grid, as the [real] gamers call it. Back at Cleveland Elementary, I rolled there, then I changed regions and played out at Brandon Valley Elementary. I have a long history [with the game of 4-square], since the early 90’s.” said Nelson.

Nelson claims to be extremely qualified to coach 4-square club. She has the unique personality in order to coach 4-square. She also has the means of fueling up the 4-square with important food.

“I think it takes a unique personality, I learn a lot from Huber and how she brings her style to coaching and advising the game. I also have the administrative qualities to coach, I can buy snacks, some days. I can provide a 4-square ball so we can play. I also have masking tape to make the square or grid,” said Nelson.

LHS 4-square club is, as of April 9, a club filled with entirely freshmen. Nelson, if she coaches next year will be glad because they will not be freshmen anymore. As of now, she focuses on the positive.

“I look forward to the challenge [of having entirely freshmen], but it really makes me look forward to them not being freshmen anymore,” said Nelson.
