On April 19, 2016 Target proclaimed that they would ‘welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender.’ This controversy won encouragement from many supporters of transgender rights. However, it also upset many target shoppers. Many are worried about their safety due to predators that could take advantage of this bathroom policy. A boycott was formed with over 1.1 million customers involved and there is lots of criticism on social media.

However, there is more than just customers involved in this controversy. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also wrote his concerns in a letter that was given to Target’s chief executive officer. He requested that Target discloses their plans in order to protect people and their privacy in bathrooms and fitting rooms.

Target has yet to comment on all the hate they are receiving or if it is affecting sales. Many believe that this controversy will blow over as Target does still have millions of supporters. However, other large companies have kept quiet on the issue, including the Wal-Mart, and it is believed that they are watching this debate closely before they take a stand on the issue.
