Magnets attract metal, honey attracts bees and democratic towns attract democratic politicians. While it was a bit out of nowhere when democratic candidate Bernie Sanders visited last week, it was not shock that he wanted to leave an impression on one of the only blue cities of SD. But, it was certainly a shock when the people of Sioux Falls learned that the 42nd President William, or Bill Clinton decided to visit to campaign for Hillary Clinton, his wife. Bill was scheduled to speak at The District on Friday, May 19, 2016.

While only an estimated 350 individuals arrived compared to Sanders’ 4,000, the speech he gave on behalf of Hillary seemed to resonate with the SD natives. Bill described how she advocates for acceptance of immigrants and embraces diversity, not a wall. This seemed to tie nicely with the influx of refugees and immigrants that have been arriving here in Sioux Falls. He then moved on to show how Hillary supports sustainable economy for farmers and a shift towards reusable energy, even hinting at subsidizing technology for the agricultural department.

The former president also made it clear that Hillary was qualified for the White House, highlighting her charitable deeds as a citizen, praising her work during his own campaign and her political work after.

“She spent a lot of time as a private citizen, doing things for other people as well as in public service,” said Bill. “She did a tremendous job helping on my own campaign and, of course, she was the Secretary of State.”

Bill was also adamant that she was the best option compared to other candidates, claiming she is liberal, experienced and realistic.

“Her plans for entry college, repayable debt and a modern economy are more achievable,” said Bill.“She has got the best record of getting things done in a divided political environment, so that these changes can actually happen. She is the most able to keep all these troubles from around the world from plaguing our lives and instead have a more prosperous, peaceful world to lift us all up together.”

Ultimately, the former president’s visit was a tactic to solidify voters in SD and further solidify her fight for the democratic nomination. Even though the primaries are beginning to wind down, each candidate is essentially making every move to grasp the nomination and until the primaries are finished, the Sanders and Hillary will continue to fight. We will have to wait and see which candidate wins the nomination.
