Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or FCA, has been an instrumental program at LHS for the many students involved in athletics. FCA goes beyond the basketball court, football field and track to help students grow as a person.

An award is given out every year to two students from every Sioux Falls High School, Brandon Valley High School and major South Dakota colleges and universities. The award recipients from LHS are Izzy Van Veldhuizen and Isaac Bindert. The two seniors were recognized for not only being phenomenal athletes, but for being people of great character.

“I think we received this award just because we showed the good character that you need to be an FCA Honor Athlete,” said Van Veldhuizen.” We show it through the sport and through everything we do every day.”

This honor goes further than the athlete’s performance in sports; the recipients are involved with FCA and often times are involved in many extracurricular activities, volunteer and are academically successful. Overall, Van Veldhuizen and Bindert received this award because they strive for success in every possible aspect of life.

“I think the example is set through running or throwing or whatever sport people are involved in,” said Bindert. “The FCA Honor Athlete Award is definitely very influential on underclassmen that need a positive influence. More people watch you than you realize.”
