LHS girls golf team looks to take advantage of age range in future years
May 20, 2016
The LHS girls golf team has been on the lower half of teams in the state in the past years, but are hoping to make a turn around in the next few years. Coached by Scott Amundson and Jared Jansen, two basketball coaches, sports experience is definitely part of the coaching staff. A lot of younger girls come up from middle school and play for the LHS JV and sometimes Varsity teams. The team is made up of a variety of players, with girls from 7th-12th grade.
As a rebuilding year for the girls golf team, they look to make a run within the next few years.
“We’re steadily improving,” said Amundson. “We’re young and we only have one senior and one junior and the rest are underclassmen.”
There are benefits to having both new and veteran players on the golf team, providing a diverse age range for the team.
“Our most consistent players this year have been Julia Mitchell and Hanna Liddiard, both the upperclassmen, and they both have played their best rounds and broke 90 for the first time,” said Amundson. “Hopefully we can get the younger girls started in the game and once they get to high school we can hopefully get them to compete for a state championship. That’s our ultimate goal.”
With the experience from the coaching staff, that is a path to a positive streak for the golf team.
“The knowledge of basketball and golf are different,” said Amundson. “ The consistent thing about whatever sport you coach is being patient with kids and trying to get them better.”
