“Nosebleed Weekend” is a headbanger from The Coathangers

If you haven’t gotten into The Coathangers yet, you’ve been missing out. This underground all girl garage rock group has been together for 10 solid years. They just released their fifth album “Nosebleed Weekend” on their record label Suicide Squeeze Records, and it’s worth a listen. It’s the sort of gritty rock and roll you’d hear playing at a record store. Maybe the ‘nosebleed’ is a reference to the hardcore lifestyle of mosh pits, street fights and partying.

Nosebleed Weekend” starts off with “Perfume,” a catchy hook of a pop song. It feels tightly wound and calculated, with the percussion in perfect rhythm and the vocals right on the beat. Third track, the explicit “Squeeki Tiki,” is a girly chant of a song infused with a unique sound: a squeaky toy. It’s a commendably unusual listening experience, but beware of headaches. “Excuse Me?” has a slower, mysteriously surfy start, but swells to a louder, demanding verse. The lo-fi filters through nicely on title track “Nosebleed Weekend” and “Dumb Baby.” Enjoy the punky shredding and dual vocals on “Watch Your Back.” Tenth track “Down Down” is full of abrasive nihilism, starting slow again, but soon finding an enjoyable change of pace at a little over one and a half minutes in. The album ends on “Copycat,” a hypnotic and sultry track that bites at newer alternative bands. You little copycat… you see do what you see… it ends with the irony of the lyrics hooray for Hollywood, baby.

The Coathangers’ whole vibe speaks “riot grrrl,” as they are a girl group simply rocking out in punk fashion in a genre of the music industry that is mostly dominated by men. To be frank, these ladies know what they’re doing. They have the experience, and they know how to shred. Just look at some of their live photos captured by local photographer Merecedes Nelson. The Coathangers played at Total Drag just over the summer on Sept. 13, and they will most likely be back soon with the release of “Nosebleed Weekend.
