The technological world was shaken up days ago when rumors arose that the giant tech company Apple was in the process of buying the luxurious supercar brand McLaren for roughly $2 billion.

Apple, the company famous for their easy-to-navigate smart phones and ultra-thin laptops, has recently been testing their toes in new waters. One of their new endeavours, a project titled Titan, consists of self-driving cars and has been in the works for multiple years. It is estimated to be completed in 2021. Very little is actually known about the project, although there is speculation of production plants and developmental labs in California, Austria and Germany. Apple has hired over 1,000 engineers to work on the project to compete with other companies like Tesla and Google, who are making advancements in the industry, pressuring Apple to do something. Right now Apple is focused on the software for the car rather than the actual body style, but they need help. Their partnership offers to BMW and Daimler have both been rejected and that is where McLaren comes into play.

McLaren, the UK-based company, has been around since 1963 and has been producing luxurious Formula One cars since. They have one of the best reputations among racing cars. Their McLaren Applied Technologies sector is what Apple seems particularly interested in. With a partnership or even ownership Apple would have access to resources and knowledge years beyond their current program.

McLaren has denied the Apple takeover but it is still speculated that the companies remain in talks about an arrangement that benefits both parties. Will the world see an arrangement or be left wondering? Only time will tell.
