The LHS girls tennis team came home from Rapid City with a state championship under their belts, which took place Oct. 6-8. This team was led by number one, senior Sidney Brower, as they finished the season undefeated, capped off by the championship win at the state tournament.

Brower moved to LHS from OGHS her junior year, and her presence on the LHS tennis team was very noticeable.

“Sidney’s effect on the tennis team this season was enormous,” said head coach Tom Kreuger. “She is a true number one tennis player. Being one of the top three players in the state this year, she won many points for our team during the season and at the state tournament. Coming over to Lincoln and placing at the top of our lineup allowed us to move everyone else down one spot which makes a huge impact on the success of our entire team.”

Brower’s individual wins this season drew much attention and she quickly became one of the girls to beat.

“Sidney finished the season with a 26-5 record,” said Kreuger. “Four of those five losses were to the state champion. She was the only person in the state to win a set against the state champion. In doubles she was 27-3 and again three of those losses were to the state champions and she was the only one to win a set off of them.”

Brower’s statistics only show a small part of the influence she had on the LHS tennis team during her senior season.

“Not only is Sidney an amazing tennis player, she is also an unbelievable person,” said Kreuger. “She was a true leader in every sense of the term. She led by example in the way in which she played with integrity. She organized team meals and snacks. She designed and placed orders for team spirit wear. Even though she was the best player on our team, you would never know that she was our number one player.”
