The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society: helping those in need

Abbie Griffin, Staff Writer

As the days grow shorter and the temperature continues to drop, most people think of this time of year as a time to spend with their families and stay inside. But for those who do not have a home or a family tend to be left out in the cold.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is a place where owners can take stray animals or pets they are unable to take care of anymore. This holiday season the Humane Society has seen a huge rise in the number of pets coming through their doors looking for a place to stay for the frigid, bitter winter.

According to Keloland News, at the beginning of November, the Humane Society actually stopped taking in animals all together. Many owners in the area are no longer able to take care of their pets and they give them to the Human Society to be adopted by another caregiver. This is called owner surrender and because of an increase of pets, the shelter has temporarily run out of room to house and care for those animals.

“If it isn’t an emergent situation, we just ask them to be added to our waitlist and we will call them in the next couple of days. That wait list gets called fairly quickly,” said CJ Burd, Front Office Lead at Humane Society, according to Keloland News.

According to Keloland News, a way to help the current influx of pets is to come and adopt or foster an animal. If fostering an animal is something an owner would be interested in, the Humane Society will provide them with the supplies needed to keep that pet happy and healthy.

According to The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, they are accepting owner surrenders once again. Even though the amount of animals at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has gone down to a manageable amount, there are still animals who need help. If we all do our part, we can help to save one more furry friend this holiday season.
