Ed Sheeran was dead. Well, not really dead. Only to the social media world for about a year, and his return was long awaited. He announced his abstinence from social media by posting on Instagram and saying, “I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while. I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years, but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes, so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
He resurrected from the dead on Dec. 13, 2016, exactly a year from his last tweet, with a tweet from his personal account of only a photo of a mysterious blue background. Although confusing and seemingly unimportant, the photo racked up 128,000 retweets and 295,000 likes. He continued to not post much again until Jan. 1, 2017, when he tweeted a video of him holding up a piece of paper with “New music coming Friday!!” written on it. Now, all his fans know he was referring to his two singles, “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You.”
“Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You” were only sneak peaks to the album. He told his Twitter followers he released two rather than one “cause I’ve been away for a bit.” The two singles fall on his new album, “Divide,” which runs along the same theme of his two other albums, “Multiply” and “Add.” While the entirety of his fandom was obsessing over his two new singles, he was still determined to shock them further. He released the names of the songs that would be on “Divide:” “Eraser,” “Castle on the Hill,” “Dive,” “Shape of You,” “Perfect,” “Galway Girl,” “Happier,” “Hearts Don’t Break Around Here,” “New Man,” “What do I know?,” “How would you feel (paean)” and “Supermarket flowers.” Although his fans, Sheerios, as he like to call them, are obsessing over the singles they are also patiently waiting for “Divide” to debut on Mar. 3. Rest assured, the Sheerios will fall in love with “Divide” just as they have with all other albums. After all, it is undeniable; Ed Sheeran is a musical genius.
