2017 Met Gala

The 2017 Met Gala took place on Monday night and all of the dresses were exotic, but it appeared few people know what it was for. I’ll admit I had to look into the reasoning for the “best party of the year.”

As it turns out, the Gala serves as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which is the only department at the Met that has to fund its own activities. It is also a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the annual fashion exhibit. Therefore, the Gala has to be a big deal.

Another aspect that is crucial to the gala is the theme. For 2017 the theme revolves around fashion designer Rei Kawakubo and her work of “Comme des Garçons.” Many of the dresses seen at the event represented an avant garde style which fits into the artistic theme. At this years event, there were 550 attendees, composed of models, actors and politicians. Because it was invite-only, the tickets came with a heavy price tag of around $30,000 but tables at the party range at $275,000 according to Fortune magazine.

After seeing the range of dresses, many people named Rihanna the MVP of the night due to the fact that she refused to play it safe and pulled off an actual Comme des Garçons dress that featured a wide arrangement of bulges and colors. It’s no doubt she still looked incredible, especially to the fashion industry.

The Met Gala is often referred to as the Academy Awards of the fashion world and it’s almost time to look forward to seeing the dresses next year. But before you do that, here is a video from Time that captures the 2017 best red carpet moments.
