The ‘dark web’ of Netflix
May 18, 2017
Did you already finish the TV series “13 Reasons Why,” “Stranger Things,” “Vampire Diaries” and “Shameless” -the current popular TV shows for millennials– on Netflix? If you did, you may be wondering what in the heck you’re going to watch next. It turns out, Netflix currently has about 1,609 shows streaming, and some of them are really good.
Here are a few of my personal favorites:
“Luke Cage”
Created by Marvel, “Luke Cage” brings a grown up kind of superhero plot. Luke Cage, the main character and hero of the show, has super strength and unbreakable skin. Cage fights crime with his super hero strength and bullet proof skin. Cage was falsely accused of a crime that sent him to prison, but his strength and bullet-proof skin allowed him to escape. The plot follows Cage as he tries to save others and be the superhero his powers have made him be.
“Jessica Jones”
“Jessica Jones” is a mysterious, dark superhero with super strength. Perfect match for Luke Cage, right? Cage and Jones meet and are shown together in both the Netflix shows as their romance grows. Throughout the series, Jones’ past struggles come back to haunt her, and she tries to use her powers to overcome and resolve her past. Kilgrave, the antagonist of the plot, has the ability to compel people to do anything he says. This turns out just as bad as it sounds, and we see Jones put in a very difficult situation in which she has to figure out how she can use her powers to help save others.

“Black Mirror”
“Black Mirror” is what you call unique. Each episode has no relation to the others, except for the fact that most are set to the future. The episodes are often dark and satirical and they use and examine modern society. They show the consequences of social media and the internet in a very vulgar, unique way.
“Master of None”
Starring comedian Aziz Ansari, “Master Of None” makes real life accounts and daily activities of a man living in New York 10x funnier. Each episode has its own theme; parents, dating, religion, jobs etc. Ansari, who plays Dev, leads viewers through his adventures through work and love. We see his struggles of identity and definitely his struggles with love. We also, through each theme of the episode, see the lessons of treating your parents right and respecting others religions given to us in an interesting, comical way. There are currently two seasons of “Master of None” on Netflix, and I can’t wait for more.
“Santa Clarita Diet”
Living in a suburban city in California, Drew Barrymore stars as Sheila, mom and wife of the show. Her life is stable and often times boring. But the family’s lives change after Sheila goes through a transition of a human, to a zombie. But Sheila doesn’t turn into the stereotypical looking zombies that we see in horror movies. She actually starts to look and feel like a more happy, more engaged person than she was before. “Santa Clarita Diet” is a refreshing take on zombies, turning a usual horror topic into a comedy.
