Trend of the week: Hammocking
May 16, 2017
The spring brings green grass, blooming flowers and the kids outside again. With the nice weather finally here to stay, LHS students look for a way to enjoy the outdoors without having to do much work. The solution to the want to be a part of nature but being an extremely lazy generation is hammocking.
Hammocking is trending lately and students are posting on all social media sites of their feet lounging in the hammock or of many hammocks in nearby trees. It is a way for people to literally hang out with their friends that want to be under the sun, too.
“I love that hammocking is something you can do with all your friends,” said senior Bronson Vasa. “It’s time you can relax, forget about your worries, enjoy each other’s company and admire the beauty of nature that is all around you.”
There are many options for colors, sizes and quality right here in Sioux Falls for students to purchase. The higher quality hammocks with the straps included can cost over$100, but Walmart sells them for less than $25. Students can spend what they want and basically all get the same easy experience of setting the hammock up. Once the hammocker can find two solid trees, the work is basically done.
“Finding the perfect spot and setting it up is definitely the hardest part about hammocking, especially because mine didn’t come with instructions,” said freshman Caroline Sudbeck. “If I want to hammock in my yard there is only one spot and I have to either get a ladder or climb the tree to hang it up. It can be kind of dangerous at times.”
Luckily for Sudbeck, there are many other places than her backyard to hammock at. Popular spots to“hang around” at are Tuthill Park, Great Bear Recreation Park and the Outdoor Campus. All you really need though is two perfect trees 13-20 feet apart, a good playlist and the sun to be shining.
