“Stranger Things,” a popular Sci-fi Netflix show, has gained praise for its unique plot, intriguing suspense, but most noticeably, its lovable cast. The cast of mostly 13 to 15 year-olds connected us to the show through their witty sense of humor and youthfulness that many teens could relate to. The fictional characters they play are not the only reason viewers love them so much: Despite their young ages, they are also extremely likable off-camera.

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on “Stranger Things,” gained respect and even set an example to others after his decision to leave his talent agency. His talent agency, APA, had fired one of their Hollywood agents who had sexual offense allegations against him. Wolfhard had been represented by this agent before and made the decision to leave following the allegations.

Wolfhard was immediately praised by followers and fans. People were surprised and satisfied to see a young boy make such a sensible, wise decision about an extremely uncomfortable topic. He knew that the man had committed awful crimes, and he did not want to associate himself with that in any way.  A 14-year-old boy had the courage to leave his talent agency because of a topic so serious and problematic; a 14-year old boy who has probably been called immature and “too young” to make important decisions on his own.

This made me contemplate the misconceptions many people have about the post-millennial age.

“You are all just on your phones all of the time,” said the grumpy, pessimistic old man. “Our future is screwed because of these clueless young people.”

These phrases are repeated constantly, but I continuously repudiate them. They just are not simply true. The actions of Wolfhard are just one example of why people’s misconceptions of the youth are wrong. We can make consequential decisions, despite the stereotype that says we can’t. Through acts like Wolfhard’s, the post-millennial generation can continue to have a lasting, positive effect on society.
