LHS junior Michaela Beck prepares for early graduation this spring.

High school is a time where students discover who they are. New experiences, changes and long-lasting friendships help shape who someone was, is and will be. Everyone has different visions for life after high school: and, for some, these aspirations will come faster than originally planned.

Graduating early is something not many students look towards. However, for those that do, getting a head start on life can be beneficial if this path is planned, organized and fits one’s personal endeavors. Being able to prepare for the future is an essential aspect in any student’s life. LHS junior Michaela Beck is among those taking this avenue towards early graduation at the end of this year.

“I wanted to graduate early in order to try new and different things,” said Beck. “For me, I see graduating early as an opportunity to get real world experience before going off to college.”

With the beginning of the fourth quarter on the horizon, Beck has been busy preparing in order to ensure early graduation is in her near future. She plans to travel to Bali and Madagascar for their wildlife conservation programs once she satisfies the graduation requirements and is able to graduate from high school one year in advance. In her eyes, early graduation means she can engage in an abundance of volunteer work while also spending a critical amount of time planning for college.

“I think the year I’m taking off from school will really prepare me for my college years that are soon to come,” said Beck. “I’m really thankful I’ll be able to go to other countries, meet other people and experience a variety of cultures.”

While early graduation is not for everyone, Beck proves that, for those who are ambitious and diligent in their schoolwork, starting the next chapter of their lives sooner than expected is a valid and considerable option.

Even though one may miss out on the festivities and excitement that come with being a senior, Beck emphasizes that early graduation is not all that far-fetched: in fact, for Beck, it is not that far away at all.
