On Thursday Feb. 1, at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles CA, a female student opened fire on her classmates. Two 15-year-old students, one boy and one girl, were shot and three others were wounded from minor glass cuts. The boy was shot in the head which has left him in critical condition whereas the girl, who was shot in the wrist, is in stable condition. The girl that is responsible for these acts has been taken into custody and police forces are investigating how she was able to access the firearm.

“We do not know yet how a young person ended up having the ability to have access to a firearm and bring it on campus,” said Steve Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles Unified School District police force.

Following the incident, students were placed on lockdown until the school was deemed safe. According to AP, Gloria Echeverria, the mother of student, was hoping that the shooting “had nothing to do” with her 13 year old son.

“I’m just scared for all the kids,” Echeverria said. “School is supposed to be a safe place for them, and apparently it’s not.”

This school shooting follows two others that occured in the U.S. just last week. One in Texas high school where a teenage girl was wounded and the other at Kentucky high school where 18 people were wounded and two students were killed. All of these occurrences have led to the ongoing gun and school school security debate to be brought up again.
