Last week, Donald Trump announced his plan to cut funding for healthcare agencies that provide abortions. The president has been adamant about his views on abortions and his proposed plan does not come as a surprise to many.

The proposed plan would prevent facilities that provide or refer abortions from funding through Title X, a government program that supports contraceptive care, STD screenings and other healthcare services for low-income Americans.

“The rules now under review, according to Trump administration officials, would require facilities receiving federal family planning funds to be physically separate from those that perform abortion; would eliminate the requirement that women with unintended pregnancies be counseled on their full range of reproductive options; and would ban abortion referrals,” according to Phillyvoice.com.

Opponents of defunding Planned Parenthood claim that defunding would prevent thousands of citizens from affordable healthcare. Facts also show that of all of the services that Planned Parenthood provide, only three percent of them account for abortion.

On a statewide level, supporters of defunding Planned Parenthood have already taken action to prevent Planned Parenthood from providing abortions. Texas decreased its family-planning budget by two-thirds which caused 50 clinics to shut down completely and Nebraska also passed a bill to defund planned parenthood.

“The controversial budget bill, which passed 38 to 6, blocks health providers from receiving funds from the Title X federal family-planning program if they perform, counsel in favor of, or refer patients to abortion-related services,” according to Thecut.com.

Consequences of cutting funds would affect access to healthcare and would also have an effect on the economy and taxpayers.

“Barring Planned Parenthood health centers from Medicaid would result in a net cost of $130 million to taxpayers over 10 years due to increased unintended pregnancies without Planned Parenthood’s contraceptive care, projects the Congressional Budget Office,” according to Motherjones.com

Legislation has been proposed to make more restrictions on abortions, but many have been overruled and shut down by Democrats in office. The future of Planned Parenthood could look to be detrimental if Trump’s proposal makes it through Congress.
