Why mental breakdowns are expensive

Mental breakdowns are equivalent to a damaged car, they are expensive.

As teens go through high school, they are expected to study, have extracurricular activities, work and still preserve a social life, yet the cost of these standards is our mental health. This goes underlooked for the most part in modern society.

We follow trends that pop up, such as ‘Yanny vs Laurel.’ These trends can also lead to social pressures that weigh down on us from peers, aka the pyramid scheme called friendship. These pressures have a massive cost on the mental and emotional spectrum along with our pocketbooks. Having a mental breakdown can cost quite a bit whether that means buying food and drinks as comforts such as ice cream, iced coffee, or renting a movie from Redbox, it all adds up, epically when gas is on the rise.

The social pressures to maintain friends and relationships has enlarged within the last few years. Social media such as Snapchat and Instagram had their roles increased within society. These social pressures are placed on us, such as being dragged by your boy/girlfriend for your stupid donkey choice for cheating. Yet the cost keeps going up: mental breakdowns lead to poor choices. Which include slashing tires, denting the car or maybe breaking some windows because the irrationality of a mental breakdown causes misjudgment and high cost.

Mental breakdowns have high cost with low return on investment. You may feel better after crying enough to flood a neighborhood, eating the city out of house and home and just you know starting new after a horrible breakup. But in all reality, mental breakdowns will not be recognized as an issue anytime soon.
