After she was arrested on Dec. 7, 2018, when a video was released onto Reddit showing her cutting a student’s hair in front of the terrified children in her classroom, California teacher Margaret Gieszinger thinks she did not do anything extreme.

Gieszinger, 52, was a teacher at University Preparatory High School in Visalia. Currently, she is released on a $100,000 bail but faces six criminal misdemeanor charges: one count of false imprisonment, two counts of cruelty to a child, two counts of battery and one count of assault. In the video, Gieszinger can be seen calling a student to the front of the classroom and chopping his hair off, throwing it to the side as she sings the national anthem. She later attacks another student and forcibly grabs her hair, waving her scissors around as students attempt to flee the room. After police interviewed the students, it was clear the students were terrified by the incident. When told this, Gieszinger responded with the words “I bet.”

While her husband told interviewers he was baffled by her behavior and thought it was not who she was, Gieszinger denies that her actions were over the top and instead berates the students for pushing her to her limit. Days before, Gieszinger said the cellphones were becoming a major distraction in class and was confronted about her actions whilst trying to take them away. Students and a parent issued complaints to the principal of the school, who spoke to her twice before the incident. When questioned about the incident and her reasoning behind it, Gieszinger brought up a foreign exchange student who had been staying with her at the time.

“She said that she had to do it for [the foreign exchange student] who had been acting like ‘a ding dong,'” said the report “She said that she was sorry that [the other student’s] hair got cut, but that it was already done.”

One student spoke up in favor of Gieszinger, telling interviewers that Gieszinger’s behavior was not common or expected. However, because of the charges she faces, Gieszinger could potentially go to prison for three and a half years. In her current state, students and parents, along with the school district, are not comfortable reinstating her as as teacher.
