New PS5 Controller ‘DualSense’
April 15, 2020
Sony unveiled its new PS5 controller, looking radically different then its previous design for the PS4 controller. The controller also has new features that are sure to draw gamers’ attention, whether you love it or hate it.
On April 7th, 2020, Sony gave us our first look at the next-gen game pad called the Dualsense. It was originally expected to be released with the new PS5 during “Holiday 2020” meaning sometime between October to December. Haptic Feedback is a big new feature Sony added to its new controllers. This simulates touch, meaning the controller will output vibrations or movements to replicate a real-life touch experience. This aims to improve the controller’s feedback and therefore the players’ immersion. Next, the new controller will also include adaptive triggers that simulate actions more accurately, like the feeling of tension in the drawback of a bow and arrow. Another cool feature being added to the controller is a built-in microphone. Sony says you’ll be able to use this to talk with your friends online without the use of a headset but will continue to include the audio jack as well.
On top of adding new features, the change to DualSense for the new PS5 controller represents the largest change in PlayStation controller design. Sony has embraced a two-toned color aesthetic and altered the angle of the shoulder buttons while rounding out the overall shape of the device, giving it a futuristic look that some say looks similar to an Xbox controller. The controller itself has grown in size, becoming more comfortable to fit different hand sizes. Sony also relocated the light bar, moving it from the back to the top, fitting around the touchpad. It’s supposed to give the LED strip a larger look and feel, according to the company. Sony has only revealed one white controller color as of right now but we can expect Sony to produce all kinds of colors in the years after release, as we’ve seen with every PlayStation controller going back to the PSone.
“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan. “The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future.”
The actual price of the new controller hasn’t officially been released, but speculation is saying it will retail around $70 since, $20 higher than the PS4 controller. If that price is a little too high for you, it is also rumored that your PS4 controller will be compatible with the new PS5 but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Regardless of your thoughts on the new PS5 controller, it has many new features that are sure to enhance your gaming experience.
