The foundation of “Enola Holmes” is strongly based on female bonds.

When scrolling through Netflix on a late Saturday night with ice cream in one hand and popcorn in the other, “Enola Holmes” is a movie nobody wants to skip. That was my exact situation when I stumbled across this Nancy Springer fiction film. A story full of adventure, mystery and individuality, “Enola Holmes” brings laughs, smiles and tears all in one.

To begin the movie, Enola Holmes brings the audience through her childhood. Growing up and being raised by a creative, daring mother, Enola aspired to be more than great. Enola’s two older brothers have been gone for years which left her and her mother to thrive on their own. The movie takes place in the late 1800s, therefore Enola and her mother were considered unmannerly and coarse because of their lively, audacious personalities. The story soon takes a turn when Enola wakes up for her one and only 16th birthday to find her mother missing. As Enola’s two other brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes, return she holds much hope in knowing of her brother Sherlock’s legendary detective skills. Little does she know, they are more interested in making Enola into something she is not. After witnessing the type of life Enola has carried on, Mycroft is determined to send her to finishing school. However, Enola is stubborn in finding her mother and soon finds a way to escape off to London. On her journey, she meets a boy, Viscount Tewksbury, who seems to be along the same path, strong-willed in the idea of leaving for good. They begin their expedition, finding clues and taking note of every little thing they can.

Starring legendary Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, she truly brought out the best of this character. Brown took her role to an entirely new level and had no trouble in showing her adventurous side. Throughout the movie, Brown formed Enola into a beautiful symbol of independence and ambition. Not only was Enola clever and courageous but she allowed herself to be vulnerable which shows true strength. Playing Enola’s brilliant brother Sherlock Holmes is Henry Cavill. Cavill is mostly known for his DC Comics role as Superman. Cavill portrayed Sherlock as caring and compassionate yet slightly complacent. Enola learns a lot from Sherlock throughout the movie eventually leading her to the ending. Next, we have Louis Partridge playing Viscount Tewksbury. Partridge represented Tewsbury as a lonely boy looking for something to add some meaning to his life. He leads along Brown to make this movie one to remember.

Within the movie, I love the drive and quickness of it all. It truly encapsulates the life of a young detective, especially one as sharp-minded as Enola. I think Enola will easily become an unforgettable figure in the eyes of little girls everywhere. Showing Enola as a strong, confident young lady who is nothing short of bada**.

Enola shows no fear when it comes to taking risks in order to accomplish her mission. The most important message of this movie is to take those risks because sometimes they are necessary to accomplish a goal. It is also very apparent in the movie that for one to succeed, one must take things into their own hands and control what they can control.

“Enola Holmes” proves itself to be a solid family night movie. Teaching essential lessons for the youngins along with giving everyone a good laugh, this movie is a new staple. Even though it is rated PG-13, there is little to no swearing and the storyline is completely appropriate for the little ones. No matter the night, “Enola Holmes” is a great watch for everyone and anyone.
