What your house’s holiday decorations say about you
December 17, 2020
There is quite a large range of peoples’ enthusiasm for decorating their yards and houses for the holidays. Some households go all-out with a combination of inflatable Christmas cartoon characters in their yard and flashing colorful lights draped around their trees, while others stick to the classic white lights lining their roof. No one is to say that one of these decoration styles is better than the other, but you can certainly tell a lot about a person or family by the way they choose to decorate their house for the holidays.
Red & white lights: This style of lights is an indication of class. You have a very clean house, with a minimalistic interior design style, and you want your lights to match this aesthetic without being considered too basic. Someone driving down the street past your house will most likely assume that you are rich, and you find pleasure in this knowledge. You also judge people who keep their lights up well into January, and take your own down within a week after Christmas.
The Grinch pulling down a strand of lights from your roof: There are most likely young children in your house, whose favorite movie is obviously “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” You tell yourself you are a genius innovator for coming up with this idea for your decorations, and refuse to acknowledge that this idea is anything but original. Secretly, your goal for the holiday season is to out-do all of your neighbors with the creativity of your decorations.
Red & green lasers: You are a very festive person, who is intent on setting up the Christmas decorations in the first week of November. Staying updated on the latest technology is very important to you, so this form of decorations is a way to display to your neighbors that you are very tech-savvy. Or at least that was the original idea; now you just do not see a point to spending hours hanging strands of lights when lasers are so much easier to set up.
Classic white lights: Morally, you are against the idea of colored lights because you consider them to be too flashy. You consider yourself to be a perfectionist, and are very meticulous when it comes to the placement of each individual light. You exclusively listen to “classic” holiday songs, and refuse to watch any Netflix-original Christmas movies out of protest. Your family has the same exact dinner every Christmas Eve, and that is the way you like it.
Excessive amounts of figurines: Either your parents were entirely against decorating your house for the holidays as a child, and this is your attempt to rebel against them and give your children the childhood joy you feel you were deprived of, or your parents were decoration enthusiasts and you are now continuing their tradition; there is no in-between. You start a countdown for Christmas in July, right at the six months mark, and consider your love for the holiday a primary personality trait.
