Soul: the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being. Everyone has a soul, but not everyone has discovered it yet. Does it take a near-death experience to finally discover your soul? The movie “Soul,” directed by Pete Docter, is a Pixar animation about a middle school jazz band teacher who does not have his life under control at the time. However, after a near-death experience, he finally tries to get his life in line.

“Soul” gained popularity very quickly, as many people awaited months for it to finally get released in the theaters. The movie was originally supposed to get released in June of 2020, but due to COVID-19, theaters began to shut down and the movie was not able to be premiered. After not much changing in the last few months, the producers decided to air the movie through Disney+, where almost everyone around the world would be able to watch. On Dec. 25, 2020, Soul was finally aired on Disney+, making over $32.5 million.

The movie is rated PG, it is an animated film filled with funny characters and a great bound of color throughout the movie, attracting all of the children’s attention. “Soul” has a deeper darker meaning than most might expect. The main character Joe, played by the voice of Jamie Foxx, is brought out of the world into the universe after a near-death experience, where he soon discovers that he is stuck in the afterlife. Joe has a piece of his soul missing. During this experience in the afterlife, he begins to contemplate his life that he realizes he took for granted. Joe begins to worry about entering death as he sees himself lying in a hospital bed, and then begins his mission to get back into his own body by mentoring a young soul named 22, voiced by Tina Fey.

The movie “Soul” may have a meaning that not all younger kids will understand at first, but by the end of the movie, there are many lessons that can be learned and applied to everyday life. Joe must find his soul before his time runs out and he meets death.
