Netflix has been known to slightly miss the mark when it comes to producing their ever-so cheesy Netflix Originals. In Feb. of 2021, they did not fall short of this stereotype as they released “Ginny and Georgia,” a teen drama outlining the parent-child dynamic of a mother with a troubling past and a daughter filled with an unaddressed grudge towards her mother for their constant on-the-move mentality. With an exaggerated storyline and a lack of realism, “Ginny and Georgia,” is far from catching the modern-day teenage perspective.

“Ginny and Georgia” begins with Georgia Miller and her two kids, Ginny and Austin Miller, as they mourn (and/or toast to) the loss of Georgia’s late ex-husband, Kenny. After being left with all of the money she needs to pack up and escape reality, Georgia decides to gather their things and flee to a picturesque Massachusetts town in hope of leaving the past behind them. Georgia’s greatest goal is to give her children a better life than she once had. However, 15-year-old Ginny has some questions about her mother’s true purpose for moving her family across the country again. Georgia’s past actions stir up commotion within town as she soon finds out she has yet another target on her back. Throughout the series, twists containing money, romance, and murder surround this family. Their impact on the town shows true as Ginny ventures to find herself and maybe learn a little more about her mother’s true colors along the way.

Although this show will keep you on your toes, its slightly insensitive comments and out-of-touch perspective have caused people to talk. In a scene where Ginny is discussing boy problems with her mother, she shoots at Georgia with a snarky comment relating to the amount of men Georgia has been with throughout her life.

“What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift,” said Ginny.

This long-lived joke as old as time has Swift and many others over the obsession concerning Swift’s love life. Throughout the years, she has endured backlash concerning every relationship she has ever had. With good reason, Swift took to Twitter to say her own piece relating to the never-ending commotion regarding her past men.

“Hey Ginny and Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back,” said Swift. “Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

As many fans have enjoyed the absurdity within this show, along with the drama it is stirring up, Swifties are not the only fandom “Ginny and Georgia,” have upset. Throughout the show, there are small comments comparing the relationship between Ginny and Georgia to the ever-so-loved “Gilmore Girls.” Many hardcore Gilmore lovers have taken this comparison as an insult towards the spunky pair of the early 2000s. As “Gilmore Girls,” strays far from delving in scandals, “Ginny and Georgia” take the cake for crazy.

Comparisons and comments aside, “Ginny and Georgia” has no problem reeling you in for a new binge-worthy series. Perfect for a lazy weekend, these ten episodes will consume an entire Saturday filled with popcorn and tissues.
