Streaming services are taking over
May 4, 2021
Over the past decade, cable TV has been used less and less while being taken over by streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. We have been told that this was going to happen for years, but no one knew when that time would come. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone realized that streaming services were much more convenient to watch their favorite shows/movies at any time. People also argue about the prices of cable compared to streaming companies like Netflix and Amazon Prime; they say that streaming is much cheaper and you can watch more shows for less money. On average, the cost of cable TV is around $55-60 per month throughout the U.S., without adding all the perks for extra channels and special features. For Netflix, it ranges from $8.99 to $17.99 a month (depending on if you want simultaneous streams). Amazon Prime costs $12.99 a month and $6.49 for students. This goes to show that streaming sites are not just cheaper, they also allow you to watch any different shows/movies at many different times.
From 2015 up until 2021, the percentage of people who have cable in their house went down from 76% to 56% according to https://www.pewresearch.org/, the largest plummet in the history of cable TV. This makes people wonder if now is the time that streaming services officially take over as the main source of entertainment. The amount of streaming sites that are available to everyone around the world is mind-blowing. There have been massive amounts of new streaming services that have popped up over the past couple of years. In late 2019, Disney+ became a major platform, announcing that they are coming out with an app that allows you to watch pretty much every movie and TV show that has ever been on Disney Channel. People went crazy for this, to look back and watch the shows that they watched over a decade ago as a young child. Now in 2021, there is an abundance of different platforms from people all over the world to watch.
A lot of people are switching from regular old satellite TV to the new and improved streaming sites. The most popular streaming services in the world are Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney Plus, YouTube TV and HBO max. Through all of the available options, these rumors are becoming more like a reality to most. We will have to see what the future holds for streaming entertainment.
