Top places to hike in the Sioux Falls area

Have you ever wanted to go hiking, but did not know where to go? Here is a list of some of the best places to go hiking in the Sioux Falls area. 

1. Good Earth State Park

Good Earth State Park is located in southeast Sioux Falls about 15 minutes from LHS. The park has six miles of trails to hike, with views of trees and the Big Sioux River. They have many other activities besides hiking for visitors to enjoy such as biking, hammocking, fishing, birdwatching and many other fun nature activities. 

2. Great Bear Ski Valley

Many people may just think of Great Bear as a winter location, but in the summer it turns into some of the best hiking trails in the Sioux Falls area. Great Bear is about an 11 minute drive from LHS. The trail is four miles long and a nice hard surfaced trail makes the hike more enjoyable. Another fun option is many people also like to set up their hammocks after their hike.

3. Palisades State Park

The Palisades is the furthest location from Sioux Falls with the drive from LHS being almost 30 minutes. The long drive is definitely worth it, since the views are unbeatable. They have different hiking trails all averaging at about one mile in length. Each hiking trail shows the beautiful cliffs, Split Rock Creek and all the other nature you may encounter in your hike. 

4. Outdoor Campus

The Outdoor Campus is about a 10 minute drive from LHS. The trails are two miles long, and it takes you through the tall grass prairie. The hike will take you around a pond where visitors can fish or kayak in. The Outdoor Campus also has many more fun activities that are available during the summer.

Hiking is an easy and fun way to stay active during the summer, but sometimes it can be hard to find a place to hike. Next time you are bored and need something to do to stay active, try these hiking trails.
