There is a percentage of kids that walk through the hallways and go to all their classes 24/7 and still don’t have an idea or choice of what they want to do when they are sent out to the world and are forced to finally become adults and make life decisions. SDMyLife is an online portal that all Sioux Falls public school students can access when trying to make a decision in regards to their future plans after high school and their career paths.

When you log into your account, on the right side it’ll have the following categories: about me, explore options and goals & plans. Under “about me” you can take a 25-40 question assessment on each of the categories that can help you out with matchmaking, your personality style, mission complete, learning style and skills lab. These are essential assessments because you can learn what skills you inhabit, what your interests, talents, strengths and values are. When it comes to questions like these, you realize how important it is to know all about yourself when it comes to finding a career path. If you don’t know what you enjoy or what makes you happy, you won’t be able to find a career or job that fits you.

Once you have completed these assessments, you’ll receive a number of careers that would best fit you based on your answers. Here is where you can dig a little deeper into these careers. You can see how much educational training is required, a range of how much you’ll be making yearly, job descriptions and real-life interviews with questions and responses. Along with the help of our counselors, you can also ask to do job shadows. This is a great opportunity that allows you to experience what a day in that career looks like and a great step after making a decision on what career you think would best fit you.

If you don’t know what you want to do after high school, I highly encourage you to talk to your counselors and check out SDMyLife. There are so many opportunities and different routes you can take other than going to a big 4-year college or becoming a doctor or lawyer. You can take the 2-year degree program route at a community college where you can earn your associate’s degree. This would be a smart route especially if finance plays a big role for you and your family’s budget.

If you complete your two-year program at the community college you can transfer to a four-year university if that’s what you feel is best for you and your educational studies; technical school, vocational, liberal-arts, nursing, and special interest colleges are other options as well. Of course, there’s always no rush to make a final decision. This is a process that you will want to go through thoroughly because your decisions and choices matter. When it comes to this exciting, yet fun, dreadful process, SDMyLife is the scholarly place you will want to start.
