The seniors and I after playing our final home game in which we qualified for the state tournament.

Caleb Hiatt, Sports Editor

While I was brainstorming ideas for my final Statesman story, I could not help but think about all the individuals I was around in my four years at LHS. I learned so much from so many different people, from Bernoulli’s principle courtesy of Mr. Newitt, to how to play Minecraft on a school Chromebook courtesy of *redacted*. While I did learn precious information from some individuals, I was also taught meaningful lessons through the activities I was involved in; most notably, basketball and Statesman.
The company that came with the Statesman taught me how to interact with people that I may not have normally interacted with or even met otherwise. As the years went on, I saw myself becoming more outgoing. I remember being a shy sophomore when I joined Statesman, I would get unreasonably nervous to tell the editors when my story was in their folder. It’s hard to believe that that’s the same kid who participated in Mr. LHS and dropped his butt to the floor on stage with the other participants during the group dance.
Being a part of the basketball team, I’ve learned more about how to lead, more specifically, how to inspire others to be confident in themselves. This sport brought me some of my best memories at LHS, but I can’t say enough good about the team this year. There was never a dull moment around these guys, they showed me how to be present and truly enjoy every moment. I am genuinely going to miss everyone who was a part of this last year’s team.
In spite of the fact that I’ve been suffering from crippling senioritis over the past month and a half, I still know that I’ll miss being a student at LHS, a writer for the Statesman and a player for the basketball team because of the people that helped make my years in high school worth it. So from some place in my heart, I say thank you to Dr. Katie Kroeze and the Statesman, the coaches and the basketball team, and everyone else who made the days go by a little faster.
