Scary but not too scary
October 28, 2022
“Halloweentown,” “Twitches,” “Girl vs. Monster,” the list goes on. The list of classic Disney Channel original Halloween movies, that is. Played over and over again, these movies now bring a sense of comfort and familiarity along with them. They touch people’s inner child and fill everyone with some much-needed nostalgia. If one has not had the pleasure of viewing these classic comfort movies, this list should help make the decision of choosing one much easier.
- “Halloweentown”
“Halloween Town” is arguably the most notable movie on this list. There are a total of four movies in this franchise. “Halloween Town,” “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge,” “Halloweentown High” and “Return to Halloweentown.” For those who are not familiar with this series of movies, here is a quick rundown. On Marnie’s 13th birthday, she discovers that she and her family are actually witches, and her mother has been keeping this a secret from them. The movie continues as Marnie and her siblings then find the secret portal that connects their hometown to a magical place called “Halloweentown.” This secret world hosts all the mystical creatures imaginable. “Halloweentown” seems all fun and games at first, until Marine and her siblings find themselves in a battle with these certain beings, including multiple twists and turns. This plot continues into the next three movies, focusing mainly on Marnie. Viewers watch her grow and mature throughout each film. Although, it is debated whether or not the creators should have stopped after the third movie. Overall, the “Halloweentown” franchise is definitely a must-watch every Halloween season.
2. “Twitches”
“Twitches” is another cult classic when it comes to Disney Halloween films. There are two movies in this series, “Twitches” and “Twitches two,” the most popular being the original “Twitches.” The movies follow a set of twin witches who are both unaware of this fact about themselves. On their 21st birthday, they discover their secret powers and that they were switched at birth. After discovering their hidden identities, they work together to take down evil. For those wanting a quick light-hearted Halloween film, this would definitely be a good watch.
3. “Girl vs. Monster”
“Girl vs. Monster” is much newer than the previous two mentioned, as it was released in 2012. Continuing on with characters discovering their identities, this movie follows the main character Skylar as she uncovers her and her parents’ secret identities as monster hunters. After refusing to stay home Halloween night, it is revealed to Skylar that she is a fifth-generation monster hunter. Deimata, the demon who has been blocking Skyalrs’s ability to feel fear, is now loose. This means Skylar is no longer fearless and has to push past this as she and her friends work together to take down Deimata and others. As this is my personal favorite on the list, I would 100% recommend watching it before October ends.
4. “Spooky Buddies”
Next up is “Spooky Buddies.” This movie is the fifth installment in the “Air Buddies” franchise. The “buddies” are a group of golden retriever puppies. The film watches the buddies in their attempt to stop an evil hound. With help from their friends, the buddies must take down the evil Warwick and Warlock in hopes to save their town. Although not very realistic, this film is very cute and good to turn on if there will be younger kids around, as it is not too scary.
5. “Hocus Pocus”
Last but certainly not least is “Hocus Pocus.” This film tops “Halloweentown” in being the most popular on this list. The movie is set in Salem and is about a comical group of witches, also known as the Sanderson sisters, who have been reawakened by teenager Max. Disney has also recently released a second “Hocus Pocus.” If there is any Halloween movie to turn on this time of year, it would be this one.
These are just a few of the spooky movies that Disney Channel offers. They are sure to provide a good spook, but will not keep people from sleeping. All this to say, there is something worth watching for each and every person out there. So pick a movie and get into the spirit for this Halloween season.
