    Sophomore Senioritis

An LHS sophomore is concerned about their rapidly increasing absences, which can lead to an office referral.

As the school year comes to an end, seniors here at LHS start to feel the effects of senioritis. The lack of motivation and the desire to graduate hit the 2024 class hard by the end of the year. But in some cases, senioritis hits the underclassman just as hard. Some sophomores here at LHS feel senioritis way before their senior year.

Amanda Smith and Niah Hudson are a dynamic sophomore duo rarely seen without the other. Smith and Hudson started their very own podcast titled Born To Yap! that talks about a variety of things including their opinions on skipping school. “Because I prefer to sleep and watch shows during the day,” said Niah. With both girls heavily involved in LHS Cheer, this sport tends to take up time in their already full schedules. Smith advocates the extreme stress school can bring down on students. “School can be a lot, it can be stressful and very boring,” said Smith. With a full schedule and tons of stress from school, both of their absences have increased. “Last time I checked it was 83 [absences],” said Hudson

Harleigh Williams is a gymnast and a Spanish Immersion student here at LHS and has a very active social life. Williams enjoys spending her time with her many friends that attend Lincoln, most of them being upperclassmen “Most of my friends are juniors so they have a pretty open schedule, so if they leave [school] I have to leave with them,” said Williams. Leaving school with her friends had an effect on her absences this school year “Out of the whole year it’s more than 100,” said Williams, “This semester it’s probably 50 or 60 right now.”

Jessie Figueroa, an active sophomore at LHS feels that her daily schoolwork can easily be done from the comfort of her home. “A reason I don’t really go to school is because I don’t like it,” said Figueroa, “I don’t see a point in coming, I could do it online.” Most of Figueroa’s friends attend other high schools around Sioux Falls making school boring without the social aspect. “Sometimes I don’t want to come to school because I don’t feel like it and a lot of my friends go to different schools,” said Figueroa. With the overall dislike in school and the atmosphere it provides, Figueroa chooses to do her work online at home. “This semester I am sitting at 73 [absences]” said Figueroa.
