At LHS, open lunch is offered to juniors and seniors during the fourth and fifth periods. The minute the bell rings, they disperse to the many different locations available for lunch. Some students return to their houses to eat, while others choose to dine at various fast-food restaurants near the school. For many, this period is one of their only breaks from the prolonged school day, and a calming atmosphere and nutrient-balanced meal could prove beneficial. My favorite lunch destination, the Sioux Falls Co+op, provides both, sustaining me for the remainder of the school day.
I discovered the Sioux Falls Co+op many years ago, as it’s a store my mom would frequently go to for groceries. It wasn’t until my sophomore year, when I decided to eat lunch there with my dad, that I realized that this quaint little market would be a perfect open lunch spot. Not only does it offer organic groceries, but also a wide selection of fresh and healthy meals as well. As I grow older and my knowledge of food and its importance expands, I prioritize what I consume to the best of my ability. My busy schedule with school makes the task difficult; however, having this option available to me makes it easily done, as it’s just a short turn off of Minnesota Ave.
The limited time of open lunch reduces the options of restaurants significantly, causing students to aim for the ones near LHS. These restaurants are picked by both the students and other people on their lunch break, creating long lines and a busy environment. Not to mention, the food isn’t particularly favorable for a person, let alone someone who requires a considerable amount of brain power for schoolwork. I have spent my open lunch at many of these establishments, and it doesn’t quite satisfy my craving for a quiet atmosphere and healthy food. I find that my mind and body work well when I can set aside time to disconnect from the bustle of school and fuel my body with essential nutrients. The Sioux Falls Co+op immediately became my go-to when I started my junior year of high school as it provided me with these. Towards the back of the building is where the meals are served. It has a hot bar where you can order a meal of your choosing, the menu depending on the day of the week, or a refrigerated display on either side with a pre-made one. Both options are suitable for the time frame of open lunch since they are quick and accessible. I usually grab something from the grab-and-go, my favorite being their apple quinoa beet salad. If salads aren’t your jam, don’t worry; the assortment of food they have there is so diverse that I even have trouble picking at times. There are pasta salads, sushi, sandwiches, roasted vegetables, different types of bowls, soups, pasta and so much more, all near a public microwave if necessary. The drink section across from it also offers a wide selection of healthy drinks.
The Sioux Falls Co-op is locally owned and operated, and their mission is to supply the community with fresh, organic and sustainable goods, including the meals they provide. They are made fresh daily, using healthy and locally owned ingredients whenever possible. I’ve realized that, despite this, I have never seen a fellow classmate, other than my friends who I’ve brought along with me, dining here. I’ve grown to appreciate having this place to myself; however, I believe more students should be aware of it, especially those who want to improve their diet and performance at school. Like me, if you appreciate peaceful surroundings to take a break in or even an appropriate study spot, I would highly recommend choosing The Sioux Falls Co+op as your next open lunch destination!
