Within the wonderful world of sweets, one dessert holds the top spot, with flavor variations unique to each servery, it is clear that cookies are second to none.
As the menu of national chain Crumbl provides new taste opportunities weekly, many find themselves continuously coming back to expand their palate to new flavors. This week’s flavors consisted of a variety ranging from a classic chocolate chip to the “pink velvet cake” cookie. Other shops have a more local footprint and more consistent offerings. One of the most popular sugar cookie bakeries in town is Eileens. While Eileen’s is less commonly known for their chocolate chip cookies, the cookie yielded a surprisingly soft center with semi-sweet chocolate chips that provided a satisfyingly balanced taste. The sugar cookies on the other hand are known for their sweetness, with a buttercream frosting design. Overall their sugar cookie was well rounded and soft, unlike Mary’s Mountain Cookies sugar cookie. The cookie crumbled too easily and the frosting did not help keep it together or provide much sweetness. Like the sugar cookie, the chocolate chip cookie was good but had a strange texture making it less appealing.
Crumbl Cookies:
Chocolate chip cookie: This cookie embodied a classic chocolate chip cookie. The taste was very buttery and the slight saltiness of the dough contrasted with the chocolate chips perfectly. While the cookie’s texture was very thick allowing for indulging in the buttery treat, the outside of the cookie would be perfect while the center was left raw. Although the cookie contained milk chocolate chips which provided even more sweetness, the overall flavor did not come off as overpowering. Overall rating 7/10
Pink Velvet cake cookie: The cookie itself was sweet and tasted like a basic sugar cookie, while the frosting balanced out the sweetness with a cream cheese frosting. The cookie was also topped with pink velvet cookie crumbs which seems to mostly be provided for aesthetic purposes rather than to add to the taste. Overall rating 9/10
Mary’s Mountain Cookies:
Chocolate chip cookie: At first glance, the cookie seems like a classic chocolate chip, but after tasting it was more comparable to an oatmeal raisin cookie. The overall texture was slightly clumpy and did not contain many pieces of chocolate in the batter. Overall rating 5/10
Sugar cookie: Although this was one of the most popular cookies sold in the bakery, it fell short of most expectations of a cookie. The texture was very dry and made for a need of liquid which unfortunately the frosting was unable to provide. Atop the cookie were decorative sprinkles to compliment the pumpkin shape of the cookie. Overall rating 4.5/10
Eileens Cookies
Chocolate chip: While this may not be the most popular cookie from this bakery, do not be fooled by its lack of popularity. Unlike other cookies, the texture is not either raw or burnt but rather a healthy in-between. Overall the cookie isn’t too sweet and could be improved on in that sense but is a cohesive cookie that many recommend. Overall rating 8/10
Sugar cookie: The classic Eileen’s cookie is the most popular sugar cookie. The cookies attract customers with their creative designs, changing seasonally. Although the designs draw people in, there is no doubt that the recipe of the cookie has been perfected over the years. The frosting provides almost too much sweetness but is balanced out by the dough which gives a chewy and cohesive taste. Overall rating 9/10
With no surprise to locals, Eileen’s cookies came out on top. The top rated cookie was the sugar cookie, with perfect texture and flavor. Crumbl’s cookies satisfy a sweet tooth, but they just missed the mark on consistency. Mary’s Mountain Cookies trailed the leaders by a considerable margin, disappointing on both taste and texture.
