“She gon call me Baby Boo,” the notorious line from the trending song “What is Yo” by YoungBoy, or more commonly referred to as the ‘OG Baby Boo,’ has taken over the internet, consuming the brains of the youth.
Variations of this popular rap song, as well as its integration into other songs, have led to a celebrated meme and yet another example of “brainrot.” The term “brainrot” refers to a category of trends that lack logic or reason; they are popular solely due to their comical randomness. The obsession with Baby Boo remixes is not due to any particular reason, yet they have gone viral on TikTok and become a significant part of pop culture.
The ultimate Baby Boo remix is definitely “Midnight Sun” Baby Boo. This musical masterpiece is a combination of the OG Baby Boo and the song “Midnight Sun” by Zara Larsson. It is a fan favorite because of its catchy beat and sustained tones. It has a heavy, autotuned voice and a distinctive bass that contributes to its techno, futuristic feel. Many teens were already familiar with both songs, so they became immediate fans when the two were combined.
“It has a good beat drop, and ‘Midnight Sun’ is popular right now, and so is Baby Boo,” said LHS sophomore Monroe Miller.
Coming in at a close second is “Hotline Bling Baby Boo,” which is a remix of Drake’s hit song “Hotline Bling.” The music consists of the melodies from Drake’s songs blended with edited lyrics from Youngboy’s hit. A viral TikTok dance was created to this remix, whose moves are based on its clear, catchy beat. Since the Baby Boo apocalypse’s target audience is teens on social media, where “Hotline Bling” was already popular, it was not surprising that the combination of these two songs gained the support it did.
“Party Rock Baby Boo” is yet another musical arrangement controlling social media. It is loved for its infectious, upbeat tempo that makes one want to start dancing. “The beat drop is just so good, and it makes you so hype, and Party Rock Anthem is just so nostalgic. [The songs] together is perfection,” says LHS student Veronica Peterson. Despite being a relatively new remix to reach the Baby Boo scene, it has already become a favorite among many fans.
Closing out the top five all-time versions of Baby Boo is a mix between “What is You” by Youngboy and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. Its snappy beat, combined with its well-known lyrics, dominates the Baby Boo trend. The upbeat rhythm of Swift’s hit song, in addition to the Baby Boo trend’s popularity, creates the perfect song to use on any TikTok video. “‘Shake It Off’ is a good song, and I like Baby Boo, so you merge them together, and it sounds really good,” said LHS freshman Calab Woche.
For some hard-core fans, Baby Boo is not just a trend; it is a lifestyle. The song plays constantly in many teenagers’ heads, along with its signature dance moves; it is sure to be a trend never forgotten.
