The wait is finally over! After 635 days since its last win, the Cleveland Browns claimed a victory over the New York Jets last Thursday night.

A lot has happened in between the Browns’ wins. Two Star Wars movies, almost two years of President Trump’s presidency and a total solar eclipse are just a few of the many events that have occurred during the Browns’ long losing streak.

The Browns have been a dumpster fire of a team for the past decade. Literally, there was a dumpster fire in 2017 outside of the Browns stadium according to the USA Today. In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, the Browns combined for a record of 1-31, which is the worst two season win percentage in NFL history. Even the Detroit Lions, who are the only other team in NFL history to go 0-16 like the Browns did in 2017, have not had as bad of a two year span as the Browns. With a plethora of subpar to downright horrible draft picks it seemed as though the Browns did nothing to stop the slippery spiral it was in.

Cleveland Browns Fridge
Bud Light put ‘Victory Fridges’ like this around local Cleveland, Ohio bars for when the Browns won its first game of the 2018-2019 season.

At the beginning of the 2018-2019 NFL season, Bud Light implemented a campaign in local bars in Cleveland, Ohio where Bud Light sent locked, ‘Victory Fridges’ stocked full of beer and if the Browns were to win, Browns fans in the bar won free beer. The campaign slogan for this Bud Light marketing ploy was “When the Browns win, Cleveland wins.”

During the first two weeks of this season, Browns fans came very close to winning free beer and getting to unlock the fridges. After a close game that went into overtime against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week one, the Browns did the closest possible thing to winning that they could without winning, they tied. In week two the Browns did not tie, but Browns kicker, Zane Gonzalez did miss a variety of field goals and extra points that would have given the Browns the win against the New Orleans Saints.

The Browns finally broke into the win column and broke its long losing streak by defeating the Jets by a score of 21-17 on Thursday Night Football. After having a deficit of 14-0 going into halftime, and with a concussion to its starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, late in the second quarter, the Browns were forced to turn to rookie quarterback, Baker Mayfield. Mayfield was the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and he showed why after completing 17-of-23 passes for 201 yards according to 247Sports. Mayfield helped to lead his team from behind while he scored his first career points in the NFL. Mayfield scored his first career points not by throwing or rushing as one might think a quarterback would, but on a trick play two point conversion attempt.

The future looks bright for the Browns as of now, so Cleveland should celebrate while they can. As a Lions fan, I advise Browns fans not to get too excited for what the future holds because the future can be deceiving, especially for unfortunate teams like these two.
