The year is 1951, World War II is wrapping up, the Cold War is unfolding and South Dakota’s first All-State band is performing in the original Washington Pavilion.
Since that first ribbon-cutting year, All-State Band has transformed from students being simply recommended by directors into a rigorously competitive audition process, which is prominently reflected at LHS. Year after year, it seems more LHS students get accepted than the previous year. But what is the underlying factor driving this tradition of excellence?
It is no secret that LHS has a historic and profound band culture. Attending band events, it is not uncommon to see generations of band parents being recognized in the audience, some even dating back to LHS’s opening in the 1960s. This ongoing tradition of a commitment to striving for new heights is what keeps LHS at the top for the number of students accepted, and what also keeps them growing year after year.
“We strive for excellence; the whole program doesn’t quit. I think it’s the tradition […] and the leadership we have at the student level that allows us to be so successful. It’s our standard, and we don’t know anything different. This level of musical excellence is our normal, and we try to reach past it,” said an LHS student.
Although LHS is known for its commitment to excellence, none of it would be possible without its outstanding directors. If not the most important factor, the role the directors play in the inspiration of students is absolutely crucial in having the band live up to its name. Many students expressed similar thoughts, and it seems to be one thing the student body is very aware of and appreciative of. From instilling values of hard work to providing free lessons, the directors do everything they can to create a thriving environment of success.
“Our band directors are […] very encouraging and helpful with the whole audition process and everything else in between,” said another LHS student.
Through a combination of strong tradition and great leadership, an outstanding competitive work ethic is fostered throughout the LHS band community. Many students practice outside of the classroom, with some even taking private lessons to improve their skills further. Even with the busy schedule many students have, it feels as though it is an expectation to strive for excellence through dedication and self-discipline.
“The fact that Lincoln holds and continues the All-State record provides a sense of duty to try, at least for me,” said an LHS student.
Looking back, the consolidation of tradition, leadership and work ethic is what drives LHS’s band to ever-increasing numbers in the All-State band. The success of the program is not solely due to attracting the most talented students; it also stems from a strong focus on culture, effort and guidance, which together enhance the program and signify personal achievement. It will be exciting to see where the band’s “strive for excellence” will take the future generations of musicians.
