The newly released movie “Wuthering Heights” is a basic original toxic relationship story and draws in teens due to its relatability. “Wuthering Heights” was written in 1847 but released into theaters this past month. Even though it was written a decade ago, it feels modern because of the intensity of conflict in love. It has key points in the movie of revenge, emotionally draining messy relationships, and toxicness. These are all key points that show up in society today, especially in teen relationships.
The relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine is intense but also destructive. The relationship is filled with love and care, but turns out to be something harmful to both of them due to jealousy, aggressiveness, and lack of trust. In the movie, Catherine marries Edgar to look good for society instead of marrying for love. In response, Heathcliff was frustrated, wanted Catherine to hurt out of revenge, and used manipulation against her. Some of these patterns, showed in “Wuthering Heights” like jealousy, toxic relationships, manipulation, revenge, and regret, all show up in unhealthy relationships in high school today.
Even though teenagers experience toxic love at such a young age, it is rarely talked about due to society saying, “It was never real love,” or “it is just a phase you will grow out of.” These young toxic relationships are almost taken not seriously at all. There is pressure around love, and teens may feel they need to stay in unhealthy relationships to avoid judgment from their peers or parents. eens can even experience the feeling of being scared to be alone. Another reason young toxic relationships are rarely talked about is that sometimes it can be hard to understand or see what being toxic is and how to deal with it, especially if it is their first love.
Films like “Wuthering Heights” are really important to see what they emphasize when it comes to what is toxic love and what is not. As a high schooler, it is extremely important not to just hear what love is supposed to be but also see what it is not supposed to be. If you are a teen experiencing toxic relationships or just not understanding what love should look like, always talk to someone. People around you want to help, and young teens need to know that no matter what, they matter too. A young relationship is still just as important.
If you have not seen the movie “Wuthering Heights,” you definitely should go watch it and understand what love is not and what it should be and reflect on what love is to you.
