Lily Statema, a 16-year-old triplet, partakes in different extracurricular activities than her sisters and is a victim of many common misconceptions about being a triplet.
Lauren, Kenley, and Lily, in order, are the Statema sisters, each one participating in varying activities, including dancing, tennis, and more. Although they are triplets and expected to be similar, this trio is polar opposite. Due to their different after-school activities, they often do not end up seeing each other until 8 p.m., but does this take a toll on their relationship? Throughout their childhood, they have grown up right next to each other, spending every Christmas and every birthday together.
“During Christmas, our parents all have to spend the same amount of money on each of us, otherwise it’s unfair. Birthdays are way different because we all have them together, so we don’t get our own day of the year, and we all have to share time and stuff,” said Lily Statema.
Is being a triplet really that much trouble? Even though there are many misconceptions and advantages, there are also plenty of disadvantages. Some even wish they could be an only child.
“I think I would [be an only child] because we just don’t get a lot to ourselves. I share a birthday with them and friends with them and grades with them,” said Lily Statema.
When triplets are portrayed, many people expect them to follow certain rules and expectations, like always being together or dressing the same, but in reality, they act more like sisters rather than triplets.
“If you are identical, they all expect you to be the same person, but we’re all actually really different, and it’s just like being normal sisters. People would also think that we wear the same things and are always together, but we are all on our own schedule,” said Lily Statema.
Although being a triplet comes with many struggles and annoyances, being a part of a trio is an opportunity not many get to experience.
“You have two best friends, and you have two people to do everything with, even if they sometimes get annoying,” said Lily Statema.
